The answer to Temu & Co. comes from Cologne: A startup competes for Europe

Europe is being flooded with cheap imports: In city centers and online, consumers see few alternatives. More and more local businesses are being forced to close. Their small advertising budgets are powerless to compete with the visibility of online giants and market leaders. 4.6 billion parcels with a value of less than €22 were imported into the EU in 2023 – 90% of them from China. Temu & Shein have taken the European market by storm, while local producers are going under. But a Cologne-based startup wants to change that.

“Local Consumption” as a countermovement to the throwaway society

As the first marketplace for 'Made in EU' products, Youro aims to make local production visible and establish a countermovement to the flood of imports. The founders not only show where the products were manufactured, but also who is behind each brand. But the marketplace is just the beginning: In the long term, a European advertising, shipping, and purchasing cooperative could be created to make local production competitive.

Founding duo puts everything on one card – because no one else does

To establish this counter-trend, Michelle Kujawa (31) and Hendrik Iserlohe (34) are giving their all: Michelle lived full-time in a van for two years to finance the startup, while Hendrik kept himself afloat with weekend and night shifts as a waiter. The management consultant and the salesman are convinced that local production can only survive in competition through collaboration and pooling resources.

Why this story is relevant now

  • Economic dimension: Local production is disappearing, billions in added value are being transferred abroad. Dependencies are intensifying. Trump's latest tariffs demonstrate the relevance.
  • Politically explosive: The EU is discussing regulation – but in the meantime, the market has long since prevailed. Amazon is already planning the launch of its Temu counterpart, the low-cost platform "Haul." The tools to secure global supply chains are lacking.
  • Consumer discontent is growing: More and more people want alternatives and clear differentiation features. But online and offline, one finds almost exclusively Low-wage imports from unsafe production. Reports of high toxic levels and safety deficiencies in products are increasing.

There's a lot of coverage about Temu and the like – but who's talking about solutions? Only together can we preserve the diversity of the European economy and make it fit for the future. Every piece of coverage helps to set an example.
